What Are A Few Good Classical Voice Pieces To Use For An Audition?

I need some classical vocal music to read and sing for a musical audition for Governor’s School auditions. I really want to get in, therefore the judges must be impressed.
I’d prefer the music to be simple, and have a good alto-soprano range. I can sing alto and soprano notes, so either is great.
Also, please include a link to the sheet music if at all possible. If not, please tell me somewhere I could find the sheet music to it.
Please help, any is appreciated ((:

  1. You really need to find a vocal coach that is either affiliated or knowledgeable of the School in question.
They will be able to help you direct pieces that will be beneficial to your audition. However, I can tell you the following based on “my” experiences in college as a music major.
Regardless of your instrument (I include voice as an instrument) as a condition of you moving forward in your studies you will need to provide a work from the 4 following eras: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and current/20th century.
Usually, your instrumental coach will help guide you with these works to ensure that they are not only representative of the era but show technical prowess over the era in question.
A mezzo soprano (as you’re explaining yourself) is a difficult range. You don’t want tunes that are solidly in the soprano range as it will just show your weakness, and you don’t want alto range tunes as they might not show off your soprano ability.
Long story short – get with a vocal coach!

  2. caro mio bien, habanera

  3. Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro!!! (It’s the piece Mr Bean lipsync-ed to on Mr Bean’s Holiday)
Also, Bizet’s Habanera is good too, albeit over performed.

  4. Alto is a choral term, not a solo voice term. You are probably a soprano. Sopranos still have a good low range, as a good chest voice is required for any voice type. You should talk with your choral teacher – especially because there are usually specific pieces required for a governor’s school audition. Anything out of the 26 Italian Songs or the First Book series.
But, if you are serious about vocal study, I would seek out a voice teacher – not a coach – they are 2 different things. A voice teacher teaches technique, and a coach teaches style. At the beginning level though – a voice teacher will fill both roles.
Take a look at purchasing these 2 books, they will be very useful in your beginning vocal studies:

  5. Anythging from “24 Italian Songs and Arias” should be fine. Everytime I do auditions I sing a song from this book. Two of my favorite audition peices are Se tu mami and Caro Mio Ben
